Be A Good Kitten Guardian
Congratulations on having become a proud guardian to little kittens and giving them a loving home. Kittens are easy pets to care for. They don't need to be walked or bathed as they are independent and manage everything themselves. Kittens do not need constant human company, especially if they are 2 together. Therefore it is always advisable and easier to raise 2 kittens together.
Some tips on kitten care:
Sleeping Place: Place an old T-shirt or towel in a small box or basket so that the kitten can be placed in it for the night. It should be in quiet space in your house. A hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and placed in the 'bed' makes it really comfortable and warm. A stuffed toy can act as a surrogate mother, or stuff clean old socks with cloth/cotton and put them in the sleeping box along with the kitten to keep it cozy and warm.
Feeding: Upto 3 months of age, kitten should be fed 3 to 4 times a day at regular intervals. From 6 months onwards, twice a day at regular times is recommended. As a responsible guardian of your little angel, please keep in touch with the nearest vet, who can advise you on what exactly you should feed the kitten.
Fresh water: Please don't forget to keep a bowl of fresh water near his or her feeding bowl, and change the water every day.
Toilet Training: Train the kitten to go to a litter box that is kept in the same place for use. This can be made from an old plastic box with a layer of sawdust or sand placed inside. It should be emptied and cleaned everyday. The kitten can be placed on the sand and taught to gently scrape it with a front paw. If you help, he will get the idea. Praise him for each successful visit to the toilet.
Exercise: Make the kitten exercise twice a day for 10 minutes, by playing with it - it will happily chase a small toy moving car, a ping pong ball or even a rolled up paper ball.
Socializing: Socialize your kitten. Let visitors handle it carefully, so that it is not scared of people or ready to scratch them when approached. Don't allow very small children to 'play' with the kitten, as being a baby he or she might get injured.
Medical Care: Whenever your kitten or grown cat seems ill, do contact your vet as soon as possible to avert any complications that delay might lead to. Cats also need certain vaccinations during the year, which your vet will administer. Remember to keep a record of these and all medications given in the IDA booklet supplied to you.
Grooming: Please brush the kitten with a soft brush gently once in a day to keep the coat shining , clean and free from flees . One should not use any anti flee spray or powder till the kitten is three months old. Mild sponging with luke warm water can be given to the kitten if it is necessary. Otherwise generally Kittens & Cats do not require bath as they have a habit of grooming themselves.
Spending Time together: This is the best part of taking care of this wonderful companion. Kittens respond well to positive words and touch. Spend time with your kitten, stroking, checking, brushing and combing the fur. This contact time is very good for your new friend as well as for you. With a little care and a lot of love, your kitten will grow and enjoy a long, happy and healthy life.
Happy guardianship!!!
